And I don't use the term 'paranoid' lightly. Just ask any of my close family and friends and they will tell you about the hours I have spent researching eco-nappies, formaldehyde-free furniture, home made cleaning product recipes, the difference between organic and 'certified' organic and chemical free baby wipes. It's amazing how productive my research efforts have been while breastfeeding at 11pm, 1am, 3am and so on.
So I felt my paranoia was vindicated when today I read about a study, which led dermatologists to call for urgent regulatory action to restrict the use of a preservative used in consumer products such as baby wipes because of it's propensity to cause allergic hand dermatitis.
The findings of the study, reported in 6Minutes, found that chemicals in the baby wipes we're allergic sensitisers (banned in Europe) and caused hand dermatitis in the parents who used them.
As a fully-fledged, helicopter parent my first though at reading this was, Who gives a rats about the parents? What about the babies ? If the wipes are causing dermatitis on the weathered hands of adult Mums and Dads, what are they doing to the delicate skin of a precious new born? Unfortunately I don't have the answer. But in anticipation of a new study finding I am steadfast in my commitment to chemical free baby wipes.
